Location: Jones Gap State Park, South Carolina

Driving east on highway 11 from near Table Rock State Park, drive 4.0 miles past the merging of highways 11 and 276. Turn left on River Falls Road (beside F-Mart). Drive 5.7 miles to the Jones Gap State Park parking area at the end of the road.

bear right across picnic area, then follow sign to campsites 1-5

begin fairly steep ascent
(watch for blue ribbons and Mountain Bridge markers carefully
from this point on -- the trail is difficult to follow)

for a potentially wet stream crossing (look for the blue ribbon on the far side of the stream)

1.2 turn left on top of knob with partial views in three directions
impressive boulder with cave under it in valley on your right
1.4 climb ladder then turn right
turn right at junction where faint trail goes right and left
1.6 cross stream
walk through narrow passage between two rocks then turn left
begin carefully following white circle blazes
large overhang on left (good rain shelter)
2.1 continue straight along wet base of large rock with grass tufts
2.2 good view along dangerous stretch beside drop-off
curve left leaving views and entering rhododendron beside stream
2.3 cross stream
turn right on old road
cross stream
2.4 unclear switchback turns left sharply
2.5 turn right on old road
2.7 stream flows under road
3.0 intersection on ridge top with five ways to go
(blazes are only visible on the path you came in on)
